Igod, Dio è l'oggetto tecnologico del futuro

Premessa

Carl Popper

I comandamenti

Tutti i dogmi preesistenti saranno sostituiti dagli unici due comandamenti del credo capitalistico: Consumare all'infinito e godere all'infinito.

I nuovi oratori

Tecnici, i nuovi sacerdoti o aspiranti tali

Introduction
The image of everything it's never been so close. The whole existence is here, behind the screen, you just have to take a look to the virtual thing, to make it exist.
Once you had simply to read it, but now technology and cult of objects are changing together.
Throughout history, although slowly, the dominant power had to give up a part of his rigidly conservative nature and release a bit 'of its technical benefits to lower class people.
The transformation that is taking place, in comparison with previous technological objects, is producing a new generation of these, with different meanings, and more complex implications.
It's happening now, a synergistic interplay, between the technological object and its social cult. In addition to this, some signifiers moved from faith to technology, to form what is perhaps becoming today, the embryo of a new mass religion.

Technology objects of worship in History
The transition from the objects of cult to the cult of technological objects is a phenomenon that takes place over a long period of time, but through some easy recognizable steps.
During the Middle Ages the dominant power considered the education of poor people dangerous and unnecessary, teaching them to read would be to provide them a critical thinking tool.
As long as schooling and outstanding technologies remained rich people's prerogative, the social balance would not run any risk. As always though, something escaped from the dense mesh of mass control. Slowly, the dominant power allowed common people having access to education, but only to ensure a greater ciruclation of religious beliefs that the Power wanted to be dominant. This process also facilitated the growth of a new market, the printed paper one. Thanks to the invention of the printing press (mid-1400s), the book (be understood as technological object) will dominate unchallenged for more than five hundred years. The process of schooling, however, will take place very slowly, in the mid nineteenth century 80% of the Italian population was still illiterate, in the same period the percentage of illiterate people in Europe were 10% in Sweden, 20% in Prussia and Scotland, 75% in Spain and 90% in Russia.
The book will remain an indecipherable vehicle of culture and tecnique for a long time, because it was hardly available for common people.
For the dominant power, the book is an highly functional object, the production tecnique and its static nature, make it easy to be censored, its small size ensures a good control of the distribution (at least initially). Proof of that is, if we compared to all the produced books until today, the dangerous ones for dominant Power are a very small percentage.
In the late 1800s the radio tried to kill the book, but it survived.
The invention of television dates back to 1925, in the next thirty years TV kill all the previous technological objects. Television is not only the most functional synthesis of previous objects, it (above all) fully embraces the criteria of use, dictated by the dominant power. To enjoy its company you have just to interpret the symbols on the remote control, any semi-literate can be indoctrinated without even learn to read or write, TV is the perfect instrument to avert the risk of excessive development of intelligence skills by the average population.
To serve the runaway capitalism, after World War II, the military propaganda converted itself into advertising. The images coming out of the TV were perfect vehicles to create the myth of neoliberal democracy, they are evocative, colorful and require minimum levels of attention. The concept of freedom shifts its meaning, becoming for the whole population, the illusion of a fair race for personal enrichment.

What is civilization if not a fight against violence? Television is a threat against all that.
Carl Popper

The commandments
Thanks to the advent of television screens, a new God appears and the old ones had, for the first time, a worthy rival. Mini or maxi, the screen will eventually replace the churches, by providing a viable alternative to the religious circle, where the final award was obtained through suffering. On TV the pain is less tense, it's close but distant at the same time, less serious, from the clowns who stumble, to the western heroes' movie, always injured but never dead. The viewer can enjoy a mild simulated and sometimes comical suffering, more acceptable to anyone and, unlike many sermons readings, the happy ending is always guaranteed.
For the poorest ones, the pathetic hope for a better future is daughter of the television screen, the most pernicious of all demigod.
At some point in human history, the ancient pact between monarchical and religious power lapses. At the exact moment when the capitalism internalizes the content of religion, it takes the same form of that, becoming the first world religion itself.

Western countries declare war just to those population who do not believe in the religion of the screens. Furthermore the oil owned by those same countries, is the prime source we use to feed the monstrous machine of overproduction, but also the screens through which the propaganda expresses itself, the very same propaganda that instructs us to fight the choosen bad guys.
All pre-existing dogmas will be replaced by the two commandments of capitalist creed: Consume endlessly and enjoy endlessly.
Television makes you feel at ease, it's easy to use, you will sit down in front of the new home altar, you can also eat and drink, you'll never be bored for sure, but mostly it's no longer necessary walk up to some temple and listen to the priest repeating the usual episodes of the old religious variety.

The liturgy
The objects of technological cult are changing, but the main functions of these remain the same: keep people away from critical thinking, from the awareness of present time and from take action in it, three very dangerous categories for dominant Power.
Through television the lower classes learn to use, as the only possible way to act in real life, with a unique language and comunication tools, the ones made available by the capitalist system. Among the fifties and sixties, the consumerist propaganda pass through the screen, it flatters and urges the unbridled consumption and individualism, it exalts the urgent need of democracy but only through the single and purely participative gesture of voting.
Apart from work places, people who watch life through television become lazy, they confuse reality with fiction, everything in real life, slowly became distant. Society is divided, the population become blind to social injustice or labor abuse. In fact, after the seventies, any possibility of social struggle is defused in the bud, when wealth becomes the most important thing, people start to demand more money instead of more rights, this way the class struggle died. From here on, everyone will work tirelessly, following the mirage of a greater reward, the biggest one, the more distant and unattainable: the wealth.
For every man and woman there are everyday work and the televison date, repetitive behaviors and ritualized ones monopolize every single life and in the end, it become impossible to understand what is funny and what is not, the middle-class citizen simply adapt and behave like everyone else, the extra work time of all people is marked by the television rituals.

We are facing a general lack the desire, because we are flooded with objects of enjoyment.
Massimo Recalcati

Celestial mechanics
As the old ones, the new religion of technology, bases its success on number of believers, they are conquered and paying viewers ("loyal" in marketing jargon). The mandatory premises are two, first: all screens will be forever connected to some network controlled by the dominant Power. Second: to generate income, the system need the physical presence or at least the passage of the viewers (audience).
Aside from military experiments, internet it's born in 1960, but we have to wait until the end of the '80s, before it can be considered the embryo of the enormous contemporary phenomenon. Compared to previous technological objects, every mediator of reality is based on the same social engineering method. More technical information end up again to leak from the clutches of Power, but for common people, these knowledge will be always very far to be used in real life (shopping apart).
The presence of modern human being still exists in real life, but it's filtered by the thecnological mediator. We are convinced that write "I love you" on a screen, or being a passive viewer, is experiencing real life, when it represents the exact opposite, the isolation. The pleasure that passes only through the monitor up to the eyes and brain is instantaneous, and the first rule is that you can enjoy it more, if you are alone.
The fundamental difference between TV and internet, is that the net will turn the screen in the perfect vicarious, it mediate the last step, the final passage between active and passive life.
The greatest persuasive power of television was to encourage the targeted consumerism, but through a generic and undifferentiated channel. The marketing experts behind the television, could never be sure of who was on the other side of the screen at any moment (gender, age, etc.) if not speculating on the basis of time slots and statistics.

From the '70s onwards thanks to the combination of Internet and personal computer, the modern era of web marketing begins, a custom screen in front of each head, a login for each user.

And here we are to nowadays, the system behind the computer (such as the old TV) is still preserving its main purpose, to stimulate the shopping, but then, after collecting the users data the system can:
Option A: Produce what is really required for human well-being or...
Option B: Stimulate additional specific requirements due to sell what the market produces (Or store in the warehouses).
The net serves option B, useless and unnecessary needs are always shaping new consumers, just to feed the capitalist system. Google for example, is providing highly complex software that serve big companies, to achieve that main purpose. The proof is the fact that now is the very same network that asks us to authenticate ourselves every morning. Our little personalized internet is pretending to give us a better interpretation of our tastes, but it's actually separate us from each other. For all of us, during surfing on the net, it's very normal to watch more often pop up ads full of content concerning our previous research. This elegant advertising circumvention system is inevitable, if you want to use Google, you will see internet shrink around you, like a blanket covered in logos of companies, that will eventually choke you.
Seen from this point of view, the network is not that gold land, full of utopic possibilities so dear to the priests of the web?
Even darknet is not an exception, since that basically the logic is always the accumulation of wealth by few people at the expense of unnecessary (or harmful) purchases made by many others. Noone is buyng the good old rhetoric, I quote "this is a pure and immaculate object and becomes evil only if you use it to harm other people", because the truth is:

There are some complex objects whose nature is inherently harmful, regardless of how they are used.

All our accounts are gradually narrowing to one (Google in fact) and that's happens because the system behind the machine must always recognize ourselves, this way our consumer's history profile, can be upgraded and delineated anywhere and the system with its pounding sales offers, can reach us anywhere and through any electronic device.
Our roaming free through the web, when does not end into commercial transaction, it's nothing but a gigantic collection of data, which is constantly generating information collected by Google and sold to companies that need that data for future commercial purposes.
Capitalism reaches all the rooms of your home and while collapsing on itself, overflows like a river of pixel through any screen, in search of your eyes. For hidden persuaders, everything that exists (even virtually) is considered a possible advertising screen. Like a golem, the system is trying to became alive, anthropomorphizing itself, dressing in hyperrealistic colors, whatewer it takes to look like us, better than us, providing a more colorful image that look happier than ours.
By flattering us the system is trying to imitate life and, each user interface will always provide us a results that look more often like the idea that the system itself has made of us (as consumers). So it ends that you write an e-mail, inviting a friend to your marriage, and magically a small pop-up appear, suggesting you where to rent a limousine or buy a wedding dress, in the next days inside all the other pages you will visit on the net, targeted advertising pop-ups will magically appear just like mushrooms, more and more often.
The new tecnogods fight for a massive media chaos, millions of thunderbolts, flying all over the web, so many that it's hard not to be hit, almost everything is clickable, and links at the end, are all point in the same direction, your number of credit card.
Google's communication is made up mostly of basic and childish infographics, the purpose of the whole machine is not to improve the kindness of your electronic equipment, it wants just reach everyone on the planet, the system is trying to develope a better selling instrument, more functional and certainly much more calibrated than the old televisions.

New oratory
The scepter of power evolving steps, goes from the remote control to the keyboard. Thanks to the advent of phenomena such as social media, the false sense of sharing is supported by unbridled collecting of "like", so we have the illusion to became a small indipendend broadcaster. The ultimate goal of each participant to the big show of capitalism is to get more visibility, and by any means everyone tries to become a naked prostitute ready to dress advertisements. The ultimate goal of every youtuber or blogger is to be attractive, to became an advertising vehicle.
Many people are dazzled by the mirage of gain money, simply staying at home and doing as little as possible. Improvised front stage men are presenting of nothing but themselves, fake social activists, young sex goddesses and so called fashion blogger etc. Everyone is an editor of countless and useless mini shows, and all of those are made following the current and with the only goal of getting more followers, because the system is teaching us that the prostitute better paid by the advertising space seller, is the one that has more followers, and every prom queen deserves to be dressed in companies logos.
The youtubers that broadcast themselves playing video games have great impact on young people. Together with social media they became the squares of the new cyberchurch, young manager present their corner on the web as the very centers of socialization. The new oratory, are nothing but fake recreational community, giving you the illusion of freedom, when the only choice is to be the an immobilized viewer.
Aside collective level of ignorance, that is increasing, the myth of the revolution made via facebook or genocide and torture that you would not have known anything about without social forum, is false, tendentious and dangerous, it suggests that we can make revolution through technological medium object made available to us by the dominant power, and all of that without taking action in real life.
Another dangerous myth is the computer genius who created his miracle in the garage, the cyber selfmade man. Any film or biography about Steve Jobs, tell us how in fact by the way, he was very far from being the good alter ego of Bill Gates.
Avatar with its accompanying photos and the "something about me", are reducing people to icons, a version of ourselves extremely summary that is just not us, a representation of me never really shared, because most feelings need to be physically shared, screen and message board are just not the way to do it.
Our electronic representations through pre-packaged channels, convince us of the real and constant presence of the other person, but it is not so.
But what is the purpose behind all that? Always the same, serve the market and the personal enrichment of a few, mainly through the massive collection of sensitive pro-sale data and the creation of attractive containers for viewers and advertisers.
Face-saving propaganda always devotes a bit 'of space for free culture, but it's getting always smaller and economically strangled (Google gain more and more money every year and wikipedia seems always to be on the verge of bankruptcy).

The Creation
Inside the technology object you can do everything, virtually everything, but is the technology object the container of everything?

Mini saint screen and the smartphone era
The actor is always the screen, smartphone or tablet with the appealing touch screen technology, its just some of the entertainment devices, many others are ready and not yet sold.
The colorful wall keep harnessed the dangerous potential of the lower class, to take action in real life, that wall repaint itself every day, and we benefit the ephemeral joy of the static viewer. As long as we are in front of the screen we can enjoy, complain, be angry, escape, have fun and decide to go where we want, but always and only virtually. "As the Coca-Cola that renews incessantly your thirst while promising you to quench it", the network promise to take you somewhere by not doing it.
Bees have seen the Queen's maxi-screen and they want just the same.
What if God would prevent the poorest and faithful people to own their technological altars in order to pray? Without the holy screen the faith could perhaps waver, but it can't happen, the cardinals of the new church have spoken: Anyone must have a walking screen for a ridiculous low price!
Technogods are great and magnanimous, the faithful remain faithful, even the poorest among them, here's the new technological worship object, the walking screen era begins, the smartphone is born (1992).

The religion of religions
If you own a smartphone, it means that you have signed a contract, which means that you are constantly logged in,  and you will soon become a faithful and loyal person.
The retention of everyone is the ultimate goal of the religion of religions.
The neo-capitalist professes the creed of people, but secretly they worship a different creed, their own, exponential growth of production and personal enrichment.
The technological object of worship works, because it's the surrogate of the upper class social status for the lower one. As a further evolution, the technology object that we venerate while walking, becomes an ever-present potential sales agent. The smartphone is remote control and television, blend together. Before smartphones "interactivity" was just a complicated word, thanks to infographic interfaces that make it accessible even to primates, the smartphone still increases the illusion of power and arbitrariness.
For all the people, to get distract during a conversation is now becoming normal and tolerated, you just have to interact with your technological object of worship, to be forgiven.

The dogma
For common people owning a vanguard technology object and its exclusive use, means the imitation of the upper classes. Through these objects, the system implements the control of the intellectual level of the masses. The GUI is a sterile metaphor of language, it impoverishes the language (enriching it in a non-authentic way) and that's the primary power instrument.

The resurrection coin
Be the owner of technological object makes everyone temporarily happy, and the two main causes are: fashion addiction, and planned obsolescence. Life of objects is becoming shorter and shorter. Every object must be buy back indefinitely in order to generate profit. To do so, the technological object is born already programmed to stop working after a certain number of use. Our old yearning of purchase (which already increased the sense of anxiety and inadequacy of us all) has now a new and powerful ally: the planned obsolescence.
The masterminds behind that, controls the industrial production, they test the object, and the goal is to use it a predetermined number of times, after which the object must stop working. For us, any attempt to repair it, generates a unique answer, the technician will always told us "you better buy another one, it's cheaper."

Technicians are the new priests (or aspiring ones)
The fanatic is convinced that he is immune to the system, he thinks he can understands it more deeply than other people, he live under the illusion of interpreting the system. This individual shows particular aptitude to establish a close connection with technological objects, a new doctrine. We will call "the technician," every priest of the new religion that is hidden inside each one of us.
He is a person of faith, with an obsessive tendency to interpret the technological object, but he can goes further, to the point that his life will become completely absorbed. The technician sometimes is so interested in the technological object, to make it a profession ... of faith.

The new Eucharist
As soon as he begins to learn, every technician is devoured by the idea of explain himself, and that's makes him an unwitting priest. Itìs like if he became the perfect propaganda instrument of the new worship, but without realizing it. He is excited by the conviction that he intimately knows the new gods, he thinks he could lavish pieces of it to other people, the ordinary mortals, if only they would understand, they would thank him for feel more elevated.

The ministers of God and the faithful people
The ruling power has only tease the right levers of our ego. We had, all of us, at least once in a lifetime, the chance. We received a bit 'of power, enough for us to goes around pompous and dress in false humility. We are all a bit 'technicians at the bottom of our soul, if we feel the chosen ones there, it means that we consider ourselves better than the simple believers. Technicians can be recognized because they tend to make converts.
Even radically cultured people, have not withstood the smartphone, the Amish of the book, those who have held the screens out of their home for years.

The technological fundamentalist
Do you remember technician? You volunteered to study the manual, every sacred texts of new programming languages, the drawings and the abstruse formulas that only the elect would understand. Now you talk to God and to feel a little 'closer to him, you pose like a medium. You distill knowledge while looking at other people's technology object, you can quickly judge the potential and lack of every technological object.
Will you reveal your formula? Shaman of the dark side, you know the secrets of registration, format changes, and file transfers. You have only to choose whether to be good-natured and bestow a little 'technical info, or you can be falsely humble and observe the silence. You almost always choose to leave everyone in their ignorant lack of faith.

The world will always need technicians
People need you to take care of dead things, because its considered irrelevant for everyone. Dead things must work, but alive ones needs to be loved, and that's not your aptitude, technician.
You translate and speak the languages of electrical monsters, you fix it, you reassure people that inside their box all goes well, the world is becoming apprehensive, for sure human body can be corrupted, but not the files!
When there will be no place on earth, most people will live through the memories and feelings attached to their virtual disks. While the brain dies, it's reassuring for us to know that inside the hard drive is all in order, easily accessible, you just need to type "search".
...and you will die of course technician, but not your facebook page!

Crisis of faith
At some point in life, however, some technicians have doubts. The technology object is not a real link with the divine, here comes the crisis of faith.
The technician has a persistent idea, he thinks "I have wasted my life chasing a God who, like every other gods, do not exist." Mocking the technician, we could tell him that the luciferin power of intellect has devoured another life. Consulates! technicians, you're like all of us, for most of human beings, existence is exactly the same, believe in something.

When a technician dies...
The technician-priest who live inside us eventually will die alone. While the last traces of his charm lies in the drawers full of old tablets and smartphones, petering inexorably to nowhere.
Another curtain will fall on that scene, giving way to a new generation of technological objects, and for sure of new technicians, younger and more prepared than us.
